Free California Attorney LookUp Tool

Each year, a significant number of attorneys in California experience changes to their licensing status, including suspension, disbarment, or ongoing disciplinary review. These developments are not always apparent to members of the public at the time legal services are sought.

This California attorney lookup resource is provided to help individuals review an attorney’s license status, bar number, and basic publicly available credential information.

The tool draws from official California State Bar records and related public sources to support informed decision-making when evaluating legal representation.

However, it’s important to understand what this tool does and does not do:

  • What it does: Confirms whether an attorney is currently licensed, active, and in good standing. It also shows key information such as public contact details, disciplinary history, and licensing milestones.

  • What it does not do: This tool doesn’t evaluate an attorney’s performance, case results, client reviews, or overall trustworthiness.

Think of this as the first step in your due diligence process.

If you have the time and ability to research further, we strongly encourage you to do so, including reviewing California attorneys who have been disbarred and are no longer authorized to practice law on our attorney discipline page.

About Attorney License Verification and Referrals

Verifying an attorney’s license status is an important first step. However, an “Active” license alone does not indicate whether an attorney is appropriate for a particular legal matter or suitable to represent a client.

Members of the public may request an unbiased lawyer referral through a California State Bar–certified and American Bar Association–accredited Lawyer Referral Service.

Attorneys within our referral network are subject to ongoing review for licensing status, disciplinary history, professional conduct, and related performance factors to support informed decision-making.
