If you got into an accident and got injured, your next logical step is to find a competent personal injury attorney to represent you in the court of law and seek the right compensation for your injuries, pain, and suffering.

What you don't know is that your nightmare might be just beginning. Here is the latest case of an unethical personal injury attorney that betrayed his oath to uphold the law and respect his clients.

A personal injury lawyer has been arrested in a theft case going back many years.

Beginning in March 2018, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department detectives began to receive reports from many accident victims regarding a personal injury lawyer. All victims were clients of the same personal injury attorney, later identified as 53-year-old Matthew Dunkley.

They allege he misappropriated financial settlements the victims were supposed to receive as a result of their personal injury awards, cases in which Dunkley represented them as a personal injury attorney.

The evidence shows that Dunkley, in addition to stealing his client's money, also took money from the insurance companies that were supposed to cover the victims’ medical expenses. The victims never received their settlements and are now being held personally responsible for all the unpaid medical bills.

At the time of his arrest, detectives believe nearly $2 million dollars were stolen from personal injury settlements. There are more than 39 charges filed against this attorney, possibly more. Apparently, this personal injury attorney began stealing from his clients as far back as 2012.

The State Bar had temporary suspended his license to practice law back in 2017 stating that the personal injury attorney "poses a substantial threat of serious harm to the public"

One of the incidents involves a 5-year-old child who had been the victim of a dog bite injury, his personal injury settlement was never reviewed and medical bills were never paid.

American Bar Association–Accredited and California State Bar–Certified Lawyer Referral and Information Service

Welcome to 1000Attorneys.com, a Lawyer Referral and Information Service certified by the California State Bar and nationally accredited by the American Bar Association.

Our role is to provide unbiased and impartial lawyer referrals to members of the public.

We operate independently from the attorneys who receive referrals and do not engage in pay-to-play or advertising-based rankings.

While we focus primarily on California employment law and personal injury matters, our referral services extend to many additional practice areas throughout the state.

Each referral is based on the legal issue presented, geographic considerations, and the attorney’s licensure status, experience, and professional standing.

We recognize that every legal matter is unique and aim to connect individuals with independently licensed attorneys suited to their specific needs.

Why Lawyer Referrals Matter

The California State Bar investigates thousands of complaints involving attorney misconduct each year.

Verifying licensure alone does not always provide sufficient insight into an attorney’s suitability for a particular legal matter.

As part of our referral process, we review publicly available licensure and disciplinary records and consider relevant experience in the practice area involved.

This due diligence is intended to help the public make more informed decisions when seeking legal representation.

  • Client service and communication practices

  • Fee practices consistent with applicable rules

Participation in the referral service does not constitute endorsement, and hiring decisions remain solely with the individual seeking legal representation.
